Is there anything that I should do if I only think that a person is having a panic attack?

Talk to the person and try to work out if they’ve any insight into what’s occuring. Ask them whether they’d ever had a panic attack, like this, ever before. If they reply in a way that suggests that this is a frequent event, then you need to try and calm them down, in both physical and psychological sense.

Try to introduce yourself to them by telling them your name.

What about if I am not clear as to whether there is something serious going on or if it is all just a panicker?

It is sometimes difficult to distinguish a heart attack from a panic attack. Even doctors need to use diagnostic tests to help them make the distinction - so you’ll need to make a judgement.

If you’re uncertain, then follow the basic first aid principles, that is airway, breathing, circulation. Look around for medicalert necklaces or bracelets. The alert may give you instructions to follow. Think about calling for expert medical assistance.

What precisely should I do to how to deal with panic attacks if I know that the person is having a panic attack?

Be calmness personified. Speak in short sentences and keep your messages clear. Let them know what is happening to them and let them know that it will be fine in the end. They may come up with some good ideas. Try to empower them and get them to feel strong and not small. Terror can feel very real and, in the correct circumstances will save their life.

However, in the incorrect circumstances it can be unhelpful and at times humiliating.
