If you think there’s a lot of effort involve in planning and preparing for a camping trip with your kids, you’re right. While camping with children can be a lot more fun, if you’re not ready it can be a stressful experience for both you and the children.

You might have to make some sacrifices as the kids take top priority. Now while it sounds bad, I can assure you that it’s well worth it and the kids will love you for it.

You spend a lot of quality time playing, hiking, exploring and doing other camping activities which are rewarding for both the children and you. You won’t mind the extra effort especially if you love your children so much.

Here are some tips that can help you out a bit:

- Children love to be involved in what their parents do because it makes them feel they’re useful so let them. Ask for their input and make them of what they would need for a camping trip. For example, do they want to go hiking or fishing or both? Allow them to pack their own things while supervising them along the way.

All these things would make them see that you value their opinions and that you treat them as mature responsible adults. They’re likely to act so because they would want to prove to you that they’re.

- You don’t need a high quality child sleeping bag. A cheap junior sleeping bag is sufficient.

- Try backyard camping if it’s your kids’ first camping trip so they know what to expect and they won’t get homesick.

- Practice using your camping equipment to make sure everything is working great and teach your children some camping skills so that they can help out during the trip.

- Instruct them how to use camping equipment like compass and rain gear.

- Prepare some stories to tell for gathering round the campfire at night.

- Teach your children to respect the natural beauty of the outdoors by taking them on day hike.

- Don’t forget to teach them how to keep themselves safe at the camp. No playing with fire and no swimming in the lake alone are just some of the many rules they have to be familiar about.

- Creating games out of camping chores will get the kids interested in doing them

- Take your children birdwatching and carry some binoculars so that your kids are interested.

- Remember to take the insect repellent and sunscreen.

- Give your kid a flashlight or glow stick so that they feel more secured at night.

- This is perfect for you and the children to do some star gazing.

- The first aid kit is essential so don’t leave it behind.

- Have some night snacks. Not inside the tent of course. Before you go to sleep, a few chats and chips will surely be a great finale to a great day.

- Bring toys that’ll make the camping even more fun. For instance, a kiddie magnifying glass will make exploring of insects even more interesting.

- Bring along a camera to capture the priceless moments but remember to bring extra batteries and film or memory cards.

Family camping trips are a fun way to spend quality time with your kids. Even though it takes double the effort, just seeing the delight on their faces or hearing their squeals of laughter all make the trip worthwhile.
